Most people know Hongdae as a place for neon lights, street performances, and endless parties. But did you know this area was once a peaceful place where cherry blossoms bloomed by a river? Let’s dive into its transformation!
During the Joseon Dynasty (1392–1910), the area we now call Hongdae was part of a village called Seogyo-dong.
The name "Hongdae" is actually an abbreviation of Hongik Daehakgyo (Hongik University).
In the 80s and 90s, Hongdae became the "coolest" place in Seoul, but not because of big malls.
Today, Hongdae is a world-famous destination that never sleeps.
"Look Beyond the Main Street" — While the main shopping streets are fun, the real magic of Hongdae is hidden in the narrow alleys. You’ll find tiny galleries, vintage shops, and cafes that look like art installations. Visit the Gyeongui Line Forest Park (near the station) to see how an old railroad was turned into a beautiful urban park!
