If you look at a map of Seoul, you'll see a large, diamond-shaped island sitting in the middle of the Han River. This is Yeouido. Today, it’s a forest of glass skyscrapers, but its journey from a lonely sandbar to a global financial hub is a true "miracle on the Han River." Let’s explore its story!
In the past, Yeouido was just a large patch of sand and reeds that flooded whenever it rained heavily. Because it wasn't good for farming, it was mostly used for raising sheep and horses.
The transformation began in 1916. Because the island was flat and wide, it was the perfect spot for an airstrip.
In the late 1960s and 70s, the Korean government decided to turn this sandbar into a futuristic city. They built a massive stone wall (the embankment) around the island to stop the flooding once and for all.
Now, Yeouido wears many hats. It is the center of three major worlds in Korea:
